Talk of the Towns: Todd’s win takes the (dog) biscuit

Everyone waited with bated breath for Todd to walk up to the front and claim his prize, but he was a no-show.

RAFFLES are among the most common fundraising initiatives undertaken by organisations.

All it takes is a few raffle sheets, someone to encourage people to buy tickets, and of course a nice prize or hamper to motivate people to buy tickets.

The Umkomaas Full Gospel Church ran a raffle in February to help raise funds to refurbish the church.

Tickets sold well and congregants had their fingers crossed, hoping that their name would be drawn.

At last, the winner was announced – Todd Kistan.

Everyone waited with bated breath for Todd to walk up to the front and claim his prize, but he was a no-show.

One of the ladies who sponsored the prize looked at the name carefully and realised she knew who the youngster was, and that the hamper would have to be delivered to him at home.

After church, the prize was duly delivered to the Kistan family’s house, where Todd was over the moon to see someone walking into the yard with a big hamper.

He bounced around with excitement, his tongue lolling and…. his tail wagging.

It turned out that Todd is the Kistan family’s pet Chihuahua – the ‘baby’ of the family.

Todd’s owner, Santosh said as the raffle was for a good case she had bought a ticket for every member of her family, including Todd.

“We were all hoping to win but were so surprised when we heard that our baby’s name was drawn,” she said.

“Pets are family too, and we are so grateful to everyone for acknowledging that and still sending our baby his prize.”
