Pro Deo cycle plans in progress

The challenge consists of a group of cyclists who complete the trip from Gauteng to Port Shepstone.

Past, present and future cycling heroes gathered at San Lameer to plan the next Pro Deo Cycle Challenge starting in Gauteng on September 2 and ending with a welcome back celebratory lunch at San Lameer on September 6.

Spokesman for the cycle team, Roeloff Quinn said the challenge was to raise funds for the Pro Deo Care Group, which cares for sick, elderly people on the South Coast who cannot afford medical care. “The event is the biggest on the Pro Deo fundraising calendar. Last year our cyclists raised R230 000,” he said.

“With the deterioration in medical care and pension funds, home care as an organised activity has become a necessity. Unfortunately, funds are limited and it is only dedicated people, such as this cycling group, who make it possible for the Pro Deo volunteers to provide the care that the elderly and sick require.”

He added that the Pro Deo Care Group could not thank the cyclists enough for what they had done in the past and for what they planned to do in the future.

Money raised from the cycle challenge will be used to support the group’s clinics in Margate and Port Edward and to purchase wheelchairs, pulpit walkers, bath chairs and equipment.

He said the tour should have at least 40 riders on the road this year, and pointed out that from next week, preparations for the gruelling tour can be followed on the Pro Deo Care Group Face Book page.
