Putts and prizes to preserve the environment

There are plans to re-establish a walking trail, create an indigenous butterfly garden and set-up green corridors.

The Trafalgar Conservation Group (TCG) together with the Trafalgar Ratepayers’ and Residents’ Association (TRRA) are holding a golf day to raise funds for several projects.

“The collaboration between the TRRA and TCG has resulted in shared visions becoming a reality in our village,” said TRRA secretary Ann-Sophi Santos.

“Together we decided that a fun golf day would be an excellent opportunity to promote the volunteer work of both groups to our local communities. Both groups share a passion for conservation and protection of our indigenous flora and wildlife, keeping our Marine Protected Area pristine and our village trash and snare free, as well as engaging with the Ray Nkonyeni Municipality, Ugu and Eskom on service matters.”

Projects in the village include re-establishing the walking trail through the Trafalgar Valley, creating an indigenous butterfly garden and establishing green corridors by planting indigenous vegetation allowing wildlife to move freely.

Regular patrols are conducted for snares and signs of plant poaching. Trafalgar Conservation hosts a variety of talks and an annual walk to raise funds for projects.

Two gardeners are employed part-time and are being trained in the removal of alien invasive vegetation.

“Trafalgar Conservation’s objective is the preservation of Trafalgar’s natural environment and biodiversity. We are fortunate to have our own conservation area in the Trafalgar Valley and our very own Trafalgar Marine Reserve. We endeavour to create a harmonious environment for all,” sad TCG chairman Tracy Taylor.
