Amadiba Crisis Committee cancels human rights gathering amid coronavirus fears

The committee said it will instead go from village to village over the course of several weeks informing everyone about the virus and how the community  can protect itself.

Amadiba Crisis Committee has cancelled it’s big human rights rally due to coronavirus concerns.

The committee said it will instead go from village to village over the course of several weeks informing everyone about the virus and how the community  can protect itself.

This is largely due to the fact that households don’t have access to information from newspapers and TV and radios. Spokesman Nonhle Mbuthuma said there was no signal in large parts of the Amadiba coast, and no electricity lines.

“Our community has a trend of sharing. When we share, we can come in close contact. For example, at a ceremony, we tend to circulate a bucket of traditional beer  which circulates from person to person. A beer bottle from a shop goes from mouth to mouth.”

The committee pleaded with all non-governmental institutions to prioritise rural remote areas. “We don’t want to be hit with this virus like we were hit with HIV/AIDS years ago because of lack of information.”

The awareness campaign is supported by the Bench Marks Foundation, Women in Mines (Womin) and Alternative Information and Development Centre (AIDC) and a range of other activist organisations.
