Talk of the Towns: Umzinto’s Mariamman Festival coming up

The word "Mari" is of Tamil origin and means rain and the word "Amman" translates to mother.

IT is once again that time of the year when South Indians gather to celebrate the Shri Mariamman Festival.

The Umzinto community will be celebrating its 125th Mariamman festival this year.

The Mariamman prayer is known by many as “porridge prayers.”

The word “Mari” is of Tamil origin and means rain and the word “Amman” translates to mother.

Hindus worship Goddess Mariamman during this festival and pray to her to bring rain and to cure and prevent diseases.

She was worshipped by the ancient Tamils as the bringer of rain and hence prosperity as the rain was essential for the success of their crops.

The festival will be celebrated at Lot 21, Flower Road, Ubelli-Belli Farm, Umzinto.

Save the following dates for the celebration:

Friday, April 24 at 5.30pm; Saturday, April 25 at 5pm and Sunday, April 26 at 7pm.
