Heather and Greg save the day – and a life
Suddenly, one of the group got caught up in a strong and dangerous rip current and was washed out to sea.
What could have ended badly for a church group at Metropol Bay in Shelly Beach on Sunday, March 15 thankfully didn’t.
Greg Britton, a former SA Marine, told the Herald he was fishing on the beach with a group of a women from Alfred County Presbyterian Church and Solid Rock Ministry Port Shepstone.

Suddenly, one of the group Tashlyn Fiennies (13) who was swimming got caught up in a strong and dangerous rip current and was washed out to sea.
Seeing this drama unfold, Greg removed his shirt and trousers, grabbed a five litre water bottle and quickly swam out to rescue the teen.

Fortunately, former world champion surfer Heather Clark was preparing for a surf at the time when and Pastor Brenda Chetty and Pastor Maggie Rangasamy called to her for help.
In the mean time Greg had reached Tashlyn and had encouraged her to grab hold of the bottle.
“Then I looked up and out of nowhere saw Heather coming towards us,” said Greg
“It was a huge relief to see her, and she certainly saved two lives that day. She was utterly selfless, not thinking twice about paddling out fast to save us.”

Heather in turn, praised Greg for his heroism.
Last week, the group met Heather to thank her, presenting her with soft toys as a token of their appreciation.
