Babalwa urged South Africans to not be stubborn and to heed the government's call for a lockdown.

Signs of normal everyday life are returning in China after 27 days of lockdown, says Port Edward teacher, Babalwa Njomi.

Babalwa is teaching English in Ningxia, China, and has been in self-isolation for more than a month.

“To the best of my knowledge people are starting to walk around, albeit still wearing masks, and I’ve seen quite a few cars parked outside.”

Life under lockdown in China did not have a huge impact on Babalwa as she and some other teachers have been teaching classes online.

Port Edward teacher, Babalwa Njomi is currently in China.

“None of us know when physical contact with pupils will resume,” she said.

“It’s been a long month but the situation was made better by a chat group created by the government of Ningxia after the disease was declared an epidemic. This kept us up to date and in touch with each other and what was happening in the province.”

She added the government was really helpful and played a pivotal role in handling the outbreak and in ensuring foreign nationals like her self were well taken care of.

“They provided and still provide relevant information. They offered to assist with masks, groceries and other essentials.

“When it comes to shopping, I submit a list of items I need and they are dropped off.”

While in self-isolation, they check their temperatures daily, using thermometers provided to them.

Babalwa urged South Africans to not be stubborn and to heed the government’s call for a lockdown.

“Self-isolation is good. Although it might seem like a long time, it will help curb the spread of Covid-19 and will allow the government to deal with cases as they come in.”
