Port Shepstone pensioner swindled out of savings

The conman posed as a policeman.

A 64-year-old pensioner from Oshabeni was scammed into withdrawing a substantial amount of money in Port Shepstone by a man pretending to be a police officer.

Police spokesman, Captain Petros Mpinge said the man had told the pensioner that he had been ‘touched’ and that his money would mysteriously disappear if the necessary intervention was not done.

After getting the pensioner to withdraw the cash and place it in an envelope, the conman pretended to take him to the police station on the pretext of assisting him.

“However the pensioner was left at the taxi rank and when he checked the envelope, it was full of unused lotto tickets. The conman was driving a white sedan, make unknown,” said Capt Mpinge.

Detective Constable Joshua Rajoo can be contacted at 039 6881293 or 0618703138 with any information.

Police would like to caution the public, especially the elderly, to be careful at all times when withdrawing cash. The police will not request the public to withdraw cash for any reason. They are also cautioned against accepting help from strangers, regardless of how convincing they may appear.
