South Coast icon Peggy Burd dies peacefully

Peggy spent her later years in the Margate Retirement Village.

Margaret May Burd, better known as Peggy, a long-time and well-known resident of Ramsgate, died peacefully at her home at the Margate Retirement Centre Village (formerly Village of Happiness) last week at the age of 92.

Peggy, the daughter of Ernest and May Partridge, was born in Pretoria on January 31 in 1928.

Ernest was town clerk of Kempton Park at the time.

Peggy married Dennis Burd in Johannesburg on December 18, 1946.

Shortly thereafter they moved down to Margate where they became local shop owners.

Over the years they had businesses selling office supplies and gifts, as well as a shop selling music, TV and stereo systems.

Dennis enjoyed doing repairs on TVs and music systems.

In her younger days Peggy was an active member of society in Margate.

She was a member of the Rotary Club with Dennis, as well as the Red Cross and the local tennis club.

She served as a volunteer with the Themba Boys Club and wholeheartedly supported the Zenzeleni Creche, run by Cookie Ngcobo, who was the Burd family housekeeper for many years.

Both Dennis and Peggy were very well-known and respected around town.

In her later years Peggy worked at the Gallery at the Waffle House in Ramsgate.

She was a member of the Margate Methodist Church and later the Baptist church, which she continued to attend until her health made this impossible.

After the early death of her first daughter Helen, and the early deaths of her husband and brother, her great faith continued to console her.

It gave her the qualities of kindness, generosity of spirit and acceptance which remained with her until her passing.

She spent her later years in the Margate Retirement Village but retained her sense of calmness and kindness which made her beloved by everyone who knew her.

Peggy is survived by son Michael of Tampa, Florida and daughter Lorna of Campbell River, British Columba and grandchildren Shaun, Chas and Cleo.
