Online petition calls for soft opening of hair salons after Covid-19 lockdown

The industry wants to be recognised as an essential service.

An online petition to allow hair salons to operate from Friday, May 1 has garnered more than 26 000 signatures so far.

The petition, started by Jake R to government calls for a licensed beauty professional to be allowed to perform a beauty service privately with one client per stylist in the salon at a time.

The petition states all necessary precautions and sanitation protocols approved by the government and the local board of health will be followed.

“Our industry needs to be recognised and deemed as an essential business so we can better serve our community.
Servicing one client at a time (while wearing a mask and gloves) poses little to no risk of spreading the virus, as compared to 20 or more people in a grocery store or 10 plus people at restaurants picking up food,” read a statement on the site.

Denmark recently relaxed lockdown restrictions to allow hairdressers, beauty salons and and tattoo parlours to operate from Monday, 20 April.

One of the country’s main hairdressing booking sites crashed a few hours after the announcement was made.
