Basil Lanka from Lazer 911 Security said reaction officers, Pieter Kruger and Jaco Smit were on routine patrol on the N2 between Umtentweni and Port Shepstone when they noticed the fleeing suspect on the railway tracks.

The man was reportedly fleeing from a break-in in Marine Drive, and was being chased by the resident.

Mr Lanka said the suspect managed to run to the centre of the Umzimkulu river bridge where  officers Kruger and Smit cornered him, but the suspect leapt over the railings and into the water below.

The officers resumed chase to the bottom of the river. The fleeing suspect managed to get out of the river and run into the sea, where he was finally arrested by the officers.

Comment is awaited from the police.
