December drownings keep K9 unit busy

Drownings have been reported despite the closure of beaches, dams and rivers.

Beaches, dams and rivers are currently closed to the public for swimming, but the Port Shepstone Saps K9 Search and Rescue unit has still been called upon, responding to two drowning incidents in late December.

Thuthukani Richman Cele’s body was recovered by the unit on the Mzimkhulu River on December 29.

A helicopter has previously been used to search the area for the 31 year-old man.

In a separate incident, a man (44) and his son (4) drowned in Gumatane Location, St Faiths on December 30.

Police spokesman Captain Petros said it was alleged that the man and his son had been swimming in an unprotected area when they got into difficulty and drowned.”

“Both bodies were recovered by the Port Shepstone Saps Search and Rescue unit in Mfazazane,” he said, noting that an official identification had not yet been conducted.
