Copper cable thieves arrested and appear in Scottburgh Magistrates Court

The accused were found in possession of 216 metres of overhead copper cable worth R20 000.

Suspected copper thieves, Sthembiso Chiya (29) and Michael Gumbi (26) were arrested by Hawks members from Durban Serious Organised Crime Investigation and Prasa Investigators on Sunday, January 31.

Prior to their arrest, Hawks received information about the men who were cutting copper cables between Umkomaas and Scottburgh.

Whilst conducting a joint operation, the Hawks caught the two men in the act cutting Prasa cables.

They were arrested for theft and also charged for damage to essential infrastructure.

The accused were found in possession of 216 metres of overhead copper cable worth R20 000. A bolt cutter, motor vehicle and two cellphones were were seized as well.

The men have since appeared in the Scottburgh Magistrate’s Court.

The case was postponed to February 8 and they remain in police custody.
