Life sentence for rapist
His name will also be entered in the National Register for Sex Offenders.
A 52-year-old man was recently sentenced in the Port Shepstone Regional Court to life imprisonment for the rape of a 14-year-old girl.
“The child was walking home from school in the Gcilima area on October 28, 2016 when a teacher known to her offered her a lift. He took her into bushes where he raped her. Out of fear she reported the rape only much later, however that did not stop police from investigating and obtaining a conviction,” said police spokesman, Sgt Sibu Ncane.
Over three years of court appearances and remand dates, the accused, Dumsani Ashwell Zulu was finally sentenced to life.
His name will also be entered in the National Register for Sex Offenders.
The investigating officer who finalised the case was Detective Sergeant Nkosentha Sbonelo Ntini of Margate Family Violence, Child Protection and Sexual Offences Unit (FCS).
“Victims of rape and abuse must not hesitate to report such crimes out of fear of the abuser or the lack of DNA evidence. Only victims have the power to end the abuse or sexual assault from happening to others when they speak out,” said Sgt Ncane.
