Copper cables worth millions recovered in Illovo, thieves arrested

The recovery and arrests were made by Umkomaas and Amanzimtoti Crime Prevention Units.

Umkomaas and Amanzimtoti Crime Prevention units, together with ET Security, arrested four copper cable thieves (aged between 31 and 55) in Illovo yesterday, March 24.

At about 11.30am, a member of the public was riding his bicycle through the area when he noticed thick, dark smoke coming out of a house in the Inqali area.

The man alerted local ET Security and police who promptly responded to investigate the scene.

“On arrival they noticed a group of people busy burning brand new copper cables at a house,” said SAPS provincial spokesman, Captain Nqobile Gwala.

“One suspect spotted the police and alerted his friends to flee the scene.”

Police at the scene.

Several suspected thieves escaped via a nearby bush, however four were arrested while trying to do so.

Police recovered numerous ladders and discovered that the copper cables found at the house were stolen from the eThekwini Council depot at Springfield Park.

Ladders believed to be used for the copper cable theft.

The recovered property is estimated to be worth approximately R4-million.

The four suspected copper cable thieves were detained at Amanzimtoti police station and will appear today (25th) at the Durban Magistrate’s Court for possession of stolen property.

Major General Thulani Gonya, Acting Provincial Commissioner for KZN, commended the team for the arrests.
