Relief as Covid-19 jabs rolled out

After an informative talk about how the hospital was handling the vaccine rollout, Cllr Gumede and Mayor Ngcobo went to the vaccination site and watched hundreds of people prepare themselves for the life-changing injection, as some called it.

The majority of residents in the mid-South Coast have been feeling a sense of relief since the long-awaited Covid-19 vaccines arrived in town. Elderly folk queued at GJ Crookes Hospital to get their vaccines last week, and by the third day (May 19), 1515 people were vaccinated.

“Although we had to wait a long time amongst hundreds of other people, it was all worth it,” said Savi Moodley, a vaccine recipient from Park Rynie.

“I also applaud the hospital for being so well-organised while seeing to many people and was amazed by how efficient they were.” Last Wednesday, the Ugu District mayor, Sizwe Ngcobo, accompanied the Ugu District speaker, councillor Ntombifikile Gumede, to get her vaccine as encouragement for senior citizens, and to see first-hand what the vaccination process entailed.

Once it was Cllr Gumede’s turn, without hesitation and within a matter of seconds, she received the vaccine.

“This is such a big relief for me because I had Covid-19 before, so I know first-hand what it could do to someone and I wouldn’t want to go through that again,” said Cllr Gumede.

“I want to encourage all South Africans to use this opportunity and get vaccinated while they can because I wouldn’t want anyone to experience the pain that I went through.” Cllr Gumede spoke about the seriousness of the pandemic in India and hopes that South Africans see this shocking reality as a wake-up call, and to start taking precautionary measures before it’s too late.
