Family frustrated at speedsters crashing into property

The family has been on the receiving end of a lot of property damage due to motorists crashing into their yard.

Frustrated and upset are the only words to describe the Govender family who reside along the P200 between Marburg and Gamalakhe.

Although that stretch of the road has been rehabilitated, it has created problems with speeding motorists. The family has been on the receiving end of a lot of property damage due to motorists crashing into their yard.

Ray Nkonyeni Municipality law enforcement officer for public safety Darren Govender and the Department of Transport representative for the Ugu region, Sibongile Msomi inspect the danger zone.

Their house sits around a bend and according to family spokesperson Kershnie Govender incidents occur regularly. “Almost every weekend people crash on this road, and this isn’t the first time they have crashed into our house. Last Saturday, a car with two people crashed into our property,” she said.

The family met with ward 3 councillor Allan Bosch, Ray Nkonyeni Municipality law enforcement officer for public safety Darren Govender and the Department of Transport representative for the Ugu region, Sibongile Msomi.

Proposals to introduce speed humps or rumble strips were brought up by Cllr Bosch in order to reduce the high accident rate in the area.

“We are trying to look out for the community who are scared of going into their front gardens because of a car coming flying around the corner. We have complained about this road and had a signed petition from the people in the community pleading for something to be done about this road,” said Mr Bosch.

Although the P200 from Marburg to Gamalakhe has been rehabilitated, the remainder of the road stretching between Gamalakhe and Ramsgate is also an area of concern with massive potholes and overgrown vegetation on the verges.

It is believed that rehabilitation on the route such as patching of the potholes would be done this week.

However the spokesperson for the Department of Transport could not be reached for comment by the time of going to print.
