Food hampers for primary school
Each food hamper is valued at over R500 and contains essential grocery items such as maize meal, rice, soup mix, flour, soya mince, cooking oil, salt, fresh vegetables and soap.
Umkomaas Drift Primary School in Craigieburn was the recipient of 442 food hampers from the Feed the Nation Foundation last week.
The foundation has provided over 30 million meals in the form of food hampers to date, in partnership with funders, Pick n Pay customers, suppliers and welfare organisations which has aided scholars, shelters, aged-care facilities, orphanages and other vulnerable communities.
It recently provided much-needed assistance to child-headed households in the country, including those in Umkomaas.
A child-headed household usually has a living parent or guardian who has no income or is unable to run their house, therefore the responsibility falls onto the child to support the household. “There are many instances where teenagers are running a home while still attending school or working,” said Suzanne Ackerman-Berman, transformation director at Pick n Pay and trustee of Feed the Nation Foundation. “We’ve even come across incidents where children as young as nine are having to support a four-year-old sibling.”
The primary school’s principal, Dr Suenitha Bhoora, went on to add that her learners are all from underprivileged backgrounds and are dependent on the school feeding scheme for their meals. “In addition to ensuring learners are provided with lunch, the school also helps feed the greater community,” she said. “These hampers will go a long way in assisting the families in the community and ensuring the tummies of our learners will be full for quite some time to come.”
Each food hamper is valued at over R500 and contains essential grocery items such as maize meal, rice, soup mix, flour, soya mince, cooking oil, salt, fresh vegetables and soap. These hampers are expected to support a family of four for up to a month and Dr Bhoora gave her thanks to the foundation for making this possible and helping the Umkomaas community.
To those who wish to assist the foundation, a donation of R21 at till points at Boxer and Pick n Pay stores can help feed someone one meal a day for a week.
