Pet owners warned about a case of poisoning on KZN South Coast

An autopsy on the cat confirmed it had been poisoned.

The Lower South Coast SPCA is warning the public about a case of poisoning in the Manaba/Uvongo area.

Carla Steenkamp, vice chairman of the LSC SPCA said they suspect that the aim was to poison a dog, but unfortunately a cat got hold of the poison and died.

The society’s veterinarian Dr Ziska Bekker did the autopsy on the cat, which confirmed the animal was poisoned.

“We urge the public to take this as a serious threat to our pets on the South Coast,” she said.

Mrs Steenkamp suggested the following if one suspects their pet has been poisoned:

1. Please have a poisoning kit in your household (can be bought through Takealot), and have your vet’s emergency number saved on your phone.

2. Try to keep your pets in your backyard, and if possible, let them sleep inside your house.

3. Please open a case at your nearest police station as well, as this will assist SAPS and the SPCA to lay criminal charges, should the culprits be caught.

4. Please be vigilant and take care.
