Call to hand in unwanted firearms

Children, in their curiosity, may get hold of them and fatally injure themselves or others.

Police have made an urgent appeal to the public regarding estate firearms that are in the possession of the family.

If they are not going to be licensed to a new owner and/or are no longer wanted, please hand them in to the nearest police station.

Police spokesman Captain Petros Mpinge said firearms are often stolen in burglaries or house robberies and used in the commission of violent crime.

Children, in their curiosity, may get hold of them and fatally injure themselves or others.

“Every firearm owner is responsible for the safekeeping of his firearm. If a firearms is lost or stolen, Saps must by law investigate charges of negligence against the owner of the firearm. The owner may also be declared unfit to possess a firearm,” he said.

Cpt Mpinge urged people to hand in their unwanted firearms and report illegal firearms to the police.
