Merlewood Secondary learners were honoured to receive a talk from The Department of Justice last week.

Members of the Representative Council for Learners were all smiles when they were given booklets containing The South African Constitution.

During the presentation, learners were enlightened through educational talks surrounding prevalent issues of cyberbullying, black market trading, human trafficking, gender-based violence, and discrimination.

Learners were also warned about the negative effects a criminal record has on employability.

The school was also thrilled to receive a generous donation of books, courtesy of Kloof High School.

Marlene Stephens, a former educator at the school, had a hand in organizing this wonderful donation.

Mrs Stephens was inspired to empower the school and its learners saying, “Learners need to be empowered by knowledge beyond their circumstances. Reading is not just about language. It improves concentration and develops mental imagery which enhances learning.”

The books will bring the school one step closer to achieving its dream of building a school library.
