Seal Freddie heads back home
When Freddie arrived on the beach, staff from South African Association for Marine Biological Research (SAAMBR) went to assess the seal which appeared to be in good condition.
The special visitor to a South Coast beach, which received VIP protection, returned to the ocean last Thursday.
The leopard seal, named Freddie, was guarded by staff from the Lower South Coast (LSC) SPCA and security personnel from Wolf Security for a few days before it decided to take to the sea.
When Freddie arrived on the beach, staff from South African Association for Marine Biological Research (SAAMBR) went to assess the seal which appeared to be in good condition.
After consulting with international and local leopard seal experts, a decision was made to leave this very rare visitor undisturbed on the beach and allow him time to rest before returning home to the Antarctic.
In other SPCA news, a total of R16 500 was raised at fundraiser, Rock Against Animal Cruelty, held at Rocky Ridge in Ramsgate on June 19.
Blankets and food were also donated.
Vice chairman, Carla Steenkamp thanked all who had made this possible.
On a different note, the SPCA responded to an incident in Umtentweni involving injured dogs.
The owner of the four dogs was away when the pack got into a fight.

Trainee field officer Sbongiseni Sunny Mtshulana was praised for going beyond the call of duty to save the dogs.
“SPCA chairman, Scott Kvalsvig, met with them at the SPCA clinic and I kept in contact with Sunny, as well as getting everyone to prep for the dogs. Amazing team work, and really proud,” said Mrs Steenkamp.
She said the owner received a warning, which stipulated that the dogs must be sterilised.
The SPCA will host its annual general meeting on July 19 at 17:00, either at Margate Country Club or via Zoom.
