As the Rolling Stones sang “It’s all over now”, but what a great three days of golf with old friendships renewed and new acquaintances made during the annual Sardine Run at Scottburgh Golf Club.

On the opening day, Thursday, there were some weird and wonderful costumes on show, the best of the bunch being the Four Freddies from Umkomaas.

But have you noticed that the uglier a mans leg’s are the better golf he plays, it’s almost a law.

A fourball Alliance was the first days format and some great scores being posted in a gentle sou’wester.

First were the Pro V Masters with with 91 points followed by the Black Panthers on 87 counting out the Big Four on the same score.

Day 2 and the wind got a little stronger, or were we a little weaker after the previous evenings sing a long?

The ladies team Hayley’s Comets with captain Hayley Gilliver and Mandy Jones were first with 44 points in a betterball Stableford.

The Black Panthers also had 44 but lost the count out but beat the Wagon Burners by three who finished with 41.

Last and final day saw a change in the wind direction and the strength.

The ball finders made hay as the sun shone as they must have picked up a hundred balls.

Hayley’s Comets, this time with Pathma Moodley and Alex Morris, once again cleaned up with 44 points.

The Triple H team managed 41 for second with the Germiston Gems third on 40.

Overall, the ladies team of Hayley’s Comets took the tournament by the scruff of the neck and showed the men that brute strength is not always the answer.

Hayley, Pathma, Alex and Mandy were crowned the Sardine run Champions for 2021, the first ladies team to win it, with 251 points, and will no doubt be the team to beat next year.

Hayley and Alex also had the last laugh over husbands Pete and Pete who had to pay up.

The Wagon Burners team of Moon Nelson, Tom and Viv Naicker and Saga Reddy were second with 238 and the Black Panthers with Sifiso Memela, Sibusiso Mkihize, Glen Mthimkulu and Thembinkosi Msweli third with 235.

Everyone else came fourth as there were no real losers as everyone who took part were winners and the Committe’s thanks go out to all competitors, the starters and other helpers and especially the sponsors without which we couldn’t put on such a great show our eternal thanks go out to each and every one.

Flyer’s footnote: The wit of man has never invented a pastime equal to golf for its healthful recreation, its pleasurable excitement and its never ending source of amusement.
