Families urged not to collect grants of deceased beneficiaries

This is to avoid family members being arrested for drawing social grants payments fraudulently.

The South African Social Security Agency (Sassa) pleads with families of deceased beneficiaries to report their deaths, to enable the agency to cancel their grants.

This is to avoid family members being arrested for drawing social grants payments fraudulently.

After a death is registered at Home Affairs, Sassa will automatically be notified and cancel the social grant immediately, as the Home Affairs population register is linked with the social grant payment system database.

Sassa also warns families of beneficiaries who died before the beginning of a month not to withdraw the grant paid in the account of the deceased beneficiary at the beginning of a month.

By withdrawing the money, families are committing serious fraud and criminal offences.

The Social Assistance Act demands that Sassa must recover the social grant payment withdrawn on behalf of the deceased. The law will demand that the money be paid back to Sassa or face the processes of law enforcement agencies.
