Umthamvuna gorge is a hiker’s paradise
Our group set off on a Saturday morning with the company of the field officers, honorary officers, Port Shepstone K9 unit and friends.
They say the journey is better than the destination.
This rang true when the opportunity arose recently to hike the Umthamvuna Nature Reserve in Port Edward.
The reserve is situated on the KwaZulu-Natal side of the Mtamvuna River, and is managed by Ezemvelo KZN Wildlife.

Excited, yes! And, the beauty is that this slice of paradise is right on our doorstep.
Our group set off on a Saturday morning with the company of the field officers, honorary officers, Port Shepstone K9 unit and friends.
The officers have gone out of their way to ensure the trails are clearly marked and easy to follow.
The beauty of this botanical oasis is what immediately apparent as you arrive at the reserve.

Its thick, subtropical riverine forest and steep rocky cliff makes it an interesting stretch to hike.
You need time, and one would suggest a full day (even days) to explore the diverse flora.
The reserve was proclaimed in 1971, is 3 257 hectares in extent and is the southern most nature reserve in KwaZulu-Natal.
The distinct ecosystems found on the lower flood plains along the river’s edge are fascinating if you are a nature lover.
If you are an avid birder, you are in for a real treat as numerous species of birds have been observed and recorded in the reserve.

Many small mammals can be seen, and the reserve is home to bushbuck, serval baboon, blue and grey duiker and reedbuck.
There are numerous nature walks, all of which offer fantastic scenery as well as the opportunity to experience different parts of the reserve, including the grasslands.
Hikers are spoilt for choice as there are a variety of different trails to choose which range from a half hour walk or up to a four or six hour walk.
Bring the family and friends and make a day of it.

The reserve has an environmental awareness centre, including a herbarium and a viewing deck, as well as a three covered picnic shelters at the main entrance with braai and toilet facilities.
