Gujurat Warriors clinch Southern KZN Winter League cricket win
The tournament was hotly contested.
Port Shepstone CC had their chances, but in the end came up short against Gujurat Warriors in an absorbing final of the Southern KZN Winter League.
The Gujurat Warriors’ five-wicket win meant they claimed the prize money of R8000.
The final was held at Chatsworth Oval on August 30. The hope had been for a final at Kingsmead but some last-minute logistical issues meant this was not possible.
Port Shepstone CC batted first and made 139-7 in 20 overs.
Morné Bishop, who came in at number three, held the innings together with 82 not out off 60 balls.
There wasn’t much support, with only Mikyle Bartle 14 (10) and Gareth Bishop 12 (17) making double figures.
Regular top-order batsmen Ashley Lombard and Sachin Kalkapersad were unfortunately not available for the match.
Pick of the bowlers for Gujurat Warriors were Yuvan Maharaj with 2-23 (3), Luc Jacobs with 2-36 (4), Samuel Bobraine with 1-23 (4) and Zakir with 1-20 (3).
In reply, Gujurat Warriors always had the game pretty much in hand, thanks to an explosive innings of 44 off 16 balls from Chad Potgieter.
He smashed six sixes to take the pressure off the rest of the batting order.
Gujrat Warriors knocked off the runs after 17 overs with five wickets in hand.
Dylan Hulett guided them home with 31 not out off 28 balls.
Others to chip in were Zuber Pappi 18 (18), Luc Jacobs 16 (11) and Yuvan Maharaj 14 (23).
For Port Shepstone CC, wickets were taken by Jayden Scholtz 2-10 (3), Liam Scholtz 2-20 (3) and Christiaan Louwies 1-12 (3).
Potgieter ended as the tournament’s leading run scorer with 294, followed by Lombard on 293, Bishop on 274 and Tyler Gordan on 246.
Louwies was the leading wicket-taker with 13, then Abdullah Dhudhat on 10, and Theo Goldstone, Tariq Mahmood and Liam Scholtz, all on nine.
Gujurat Warriors’ squad for the final included owner Mr Puma, Azaz Patel (c), Samuel Bobraine, Suhel Gulya, Rashid Khan, Nkosinathi Muthwa, Chad Potgieter, Yuvan Maharaj, Zakir Munsi, Dylan Hulett, Luc Jacobs, Tosif Patel, Mubarak Patel and Zuber Hansbhai.
Looking ahead, the summer league is due to start on October 11.
