Margate policeman retires after 34 years

Police spokesman Sergeant Sibu Ncane said that during this time of unrest in South Africa, Capt Shusha was often on the frontline, facing angry crowds and ensuring stability.

Margate Saps bids farewell to Captain Welcome Shusha after 34 years in the police force.

He spent most of his policing career in the crime prevention environment.

Capt Shusha started his policing career in Pretoria in 1987, where he served with the Riot Unit, also known as Unit 19.

Police spokesman Sergeant Sibu Ncane said that during this time of unrest in South Africa, Capt Shusha was often on the frontline, facing angry crowds and ensuring stability.

Over the years, he worked at a number of police stations, including Port Shepstone, Margate and Gamalakhe, serving as station commander at Gamalakhe for a while, before working in Margate from 2020 until his retirement.

“His wisdom and patience made it easy to communicate and deal with stakeholders and members. Capt Shusha believed in being actively involved in policing and rarely tasked others if he could do it himself,” said Sgt Ncane.

Capt Shusha worked hard alongside his members.

“I would not have been successful in my career without the support received from my family, management and the members,” he said.

He admits he had several choices in life but chose to be a policeman, to serve and protect the public.

He added that if not for his age, he would love to continue working in this job that he loves.

Margate Station Commander, Brigadier William Slabbert thanked him for his discipline and dedication.

He described him as an irreplaceable asset, a man of integrity and humility.

He will be greatly missed by Margate Saps, the provincial and national office as well as security companies and traditional leaders.
