Beloved centenarian is mourned

Enid originated from Bloemfontein where she attended Bloemfontein Convent and thereafter St. Dominic's Academy in Newcastle.

Enid Mary Bowker, an adored Izotsha resident, died on June 11.

A determined woman, Enid lived to the fantastic age of 106.

As a loving mother of three, a grandmother of nine and a great grandmother of 17, she was viewed as a matriarch by her family.

Enid originated from Bloemfontein where she attended Bloemfontein Convent and thereafter St. Dominic’s Academy in Newcastle.

It was that education which planted the seed for her Catholic faith.

Coming from a very musical family, Enid was the first student in the province to obtain her matric qualification in music.

She went on to complete her business degree at Bloemfontein University, where she and her sisters created quite the stir having been the only women enrolled in the course at the time.

Thereafter, Enid moved to Johannesburg during the depression, where she worked as a shorthand typist.

It was also during this period that Enid met her husband, Kenick Turner Bowker on a blind date.

The couple married in 1939 and then Kenick had to go off to fight in World War II.

Enid spent her retirement on the South Coast, from 1973, where she continued to live a fulfilling life.

She became an active member of the Queen of Peace Margate Catholic Church for over 40 years, and was well-known for the church banners she sewed with her own hands.

Enid raised a very close-knit family and was always ecstatic whenever they all gathered together.

Her life revolved around her family and she absolutely adored children and babies alike.

It is with great sadness that her family wish her goodbye as she was an inspiration to everyone she met and will be greatly missed.
