PROTEST UPDATE: Communities unite in ‘spirit of ubuntu’ to protect South Coast suburbs [WATCH]

Hundreds of dedicated community members, together with security officers, have formed barricades to safeguard Port Shepstone and secure surrounding suburbs.

Communities are on high alert as mixed reports circulated on social media are indicating a further possibility of  unrest on the KZN South Coast.

However, community members joined forces in true ‘ubuntu spirit’ to protect and safeguard the town of Port Shepstone and surrounding suburbs.

In Tweni, the community have taken it upon themselves to secure the suburb with road blocks. 

Security personnel, police, Ray Nkonyeni Municipality Law Enforcement officers and civilians have been monitoring the riots for most of today (Monday). 

In the last 24 hours, protesters have looted towns and areas such as Gamalakhe, Mkholombe, Port Edward and Harding.

Unknown rioters also set Ugu District Municipality’s water tanks, officers, vehicles and fresh produce market alight.

A crowd of 300 to 400 people was seen moving from Murchison towards the Marburg and Merlewood area, but was stopped in its tracks by police, law enforcement and businessmen.  

Tonight, chaos rang out in Hibberdene.

At first it was thought the popular Jolly Roger pub and restaurant was on fire, but it later was established a tree had been set alight.

The KFC in Gamalakhe was set alight and looted.

Chanting and gunshots were heard in and around Uvongo, Manaba and Margate areas, with reports of a crowd of protesters coming down Seaslopes in Uvongo. 

But, it appears to be all under control, and reports of people being arrested are filtering through.

Emergency personnel are urging people to stay at home and away from shops.
