DRAMATIC PICS: 48 hours of looting and riots in Port Edward #SouthCoastProtests

Television producer and journalist Phillip Lennon has captured the recent goings-on in Port Edward and Leisure Bay areas.

Seasoned journalist Phillip Lennon, armed with his camera, was brave enough to go into the coastal town of Port Edward this week.

Protesters at Thongasi on the R61 on Monday this week.

“Boxer, Buildit and Amos hardware looted today (Tuesday) in Port Edward. Saps and local security plus farmers were overwhelmed around 15:00. They had to withdraw and that is when Boxer fell, closely followed by Buildit. I left area when too much attention was paid to my camera around 13:00,” he said.

Philip said the The Spar centre in Port Edward has gone the way of so many shopping centres in SA.

“Just back from a drive into Port Edward. Surreal. So much destruction. People pushing fully laden shopping trolleys down the R61 without a care in the world,” he said yesterday (Tuesday).

“On the KZN Lower South Coast the community is literally working in shifts 24/7 to protect our area. SAPS are overwhelmed.”
