Defence Force arrives to help Umdoni team maintain peace, retrieve goods and make arrests

Umdoni Municipality councillors, traditional and religious leadership, SANDF and Saps have begun a vigorous root-out process for looted goods and will apprehend people suspected to be involved in last week's looting.

The South African National Defence Force (SANDF) arrived on the mid-South Coast yesterday (July 21) to join the Umdoni team formed to conduct a vigorous root-out process of looted goods and apprehend people suspected to be involved in last week’s looting.

The team, consisting of Umdoni Municipality councillors, traditional and religious leadership and Saps, welcomed 160 SANDF personnel who are also expected to bring about peace and stability in the area after the destructive protests.

“We have been informed in confidence that the army members will be working 24/7 in our area and this will have a positive impact in our efforts to rebuild our community,” said Umdoni mayor, Sibongile Khathi.

“We therefore urge for the cooperation of the members of the public, business forums amongst other structures while government implements all measures to ensure stability and create a safe and peaceful environment for the Umdoni people.”

SANDF members were spotted in Sezela yesterday (July 21) and near Park Rynie today (July 22).
