Teenage boys burnt inside Ugu Market

Philasande Dlamini (16) and Lihle Nxulwa (17), learners from Nobamba High School in Bhobhoyi were burnt beyond recognition at Ugu Market in Mkholombe last Tuesday.

Families of these teenagers say the boys were burnt inside the market on Tuesday evening.

Lihle Nxulwa (17) was a grade 10 learner at Nobamba High School.
Philasande Dlamini (16), a grade 11 learner in Nobamba High School.

Musawenkosi Gladile (52), father of Philasande, originally from Flagstaff in Eastern Cape said his son had just finished doing his house chores and getting water from the community tap.

Gladile says his son left at around 11am with his friends, then at 6pm the mother of his friend came to ask if he had seen the boys because she had heard there were two boys found burnt inside the market.

“We quickly rushed there but could not go inside. We were told to wait for the police, even after the police came we were still not allowed inside,” he said.

Musawenkosi Gladile (52) says he is devastated after losing his son Philasande.

“We went back the following day then they asked for our identity documents and the boys certificates and we were told that we would go for a DNA test,” said Gladile.

He said that he refused to do a DNA test and said he would be able to identify his son.

A few days later they were then phoned and asked to come to the morgue and identify the bodies.

Gladile said the his son was badly burnt and could not identify him by looking at his face but recognised the clothes and shoes he was wearing.

Noluthando Nxulwa, mother of Lihle, said she was devastated and finding it hard to sleep at night.

Ugu Market premises where the boys died last week.

“I could identify him at the morgue but he was badly injured and his body was swollen,” said Nxulwa.

She described the incident terrifying.

Nxulwa and her family are originally from Qumbu in the Eastern Cape and said the family would laying his son to rest in Qumbu on Sunday.
