Two killed in suspected hit

The prince and his uncle were declared dead at the scene.

Scores of mourners paid their last respects to Prince Vulingqondo Madlala (60) of the KwaMadlala clan near Port Shepstone and his uncle Qinisela Madlala (37) at eSibhalweni, KwaMadlala location last Saturday.

They were ambushed and shot dead last Monday, while they travelled with two other men to uMzumbe river, where Prince Madlala had a sand mining business.

According to provincial police spokesperson, Colonel Thembeka Mbele, charges of murder and attempted murder were opened for investigation by Southport Saps.

“It is alleged that four men were travelling along the gravel road next to the Umzumbe river when unknown men emerged from the bushes and fired several shots at their vehicle,” she added.

The prince and his uncle were declared dead at the scene.

A third man sustained a gunshot wound to the leg and a fourth escaped unharmed.

During the funeral service for the two men, mourners spoke fondly of them.

Speaking on behalf of the royal household, Prince Mbonisi Zulu said: “I do not have enough words to describe what had happened, it is so heartless.”

IFP president, Velenkosini Hlabisa described the manner in which Prince Madlala and his uncle were killed as inhumane.

“It is comforting to lose someone who had been sick because you quickly accept their death, but when they die from a gunshot, it leaves open bleeding wounds which takes ages to heal,” said Mr Hlabisa.

Zama Madlala, daughter of Prince Madlala said her dad was a loving person who took care of them. She said life will never be the same without him being around as he was a supportive person.

The men were buried at Izotsha Cemetery.
