Model promotes women empowerment
Niksha Sevnaran of Park Rynie, offers insight on what it means to be a woman in this day and age.
With August being considered women’s month, and with National Women’s Day around the corner (August 9), modelling coach and owner of South Coast Models, Niksha Sevnaran of Park Rynie, offers insight on what it means to be a woman in this day and age and shares words of wisdom to women, both young and old, in her community.
Q: Why do you think it is important to celebrate women?
A: Women are the primary caretakers of children and elders in every country of the world. It is a day to acknowledge and honour women around the world for the contributions we make each day to society. We celebrate a woman’s success and raise awareness against bias. Hence, the goal is to create a gender-equal world and also to acknowledge how far we’ve come in terms of gender equality.
Q: Do you think there are still challenges women face today because of their gender?
A: Some of the challenges women still face are domestic violence and sexual harassment. Women as bosses are looked down upon and not always treated equally. There are also times where a woman’s opinion is not always heard and lastly, they are unable to dress the way they want to without being judged.
Q: As a young model who coaches many other youngsters in the community, do you believe modelling allows for women empowerment and how?
A: Definitely. The upcoming models become confident for the right reasons. We help build each other by sharing our challenges and get advice. There is no judgment and we show love and care to those in need. I encourage the models to realise that they are different, but not superior to others or look down on others.
Q: Can you describe the type of woman you are in just three words?
A: Tough, bold and kind.
Q: Is there a specific woman in your community who has been a role model to you and why?
A: I have always looked up to my mother. She has taken the role of my father too because he has died. I admire her strength. She is hardworking, patient, loving and giving. She encourages me and always tries her best to give me good advice. I strive because she is my support structure through everything step in my life.
Q: In celebration of women’s month, do you have a special message for the women in your community?
A: The only thing more powerful than a confident woman is an army of them. Let us acknowledge our worth and celebrate it. Let us help build each other and grow together.
