Panorama parade re-opens for business

The journey concluded on Monday this week as all stakeholders were present for the re-opening of the road.

Earlier this year, Ray Nkonyeni Municipality (RNM) along with the Margate Business Association (MBA) and the Margate Residents’ and Ratepayers’ Association (MRARA) joined forces to rehabilitate a section of Panorama Parade at the Margate beachfront, near the fishing pier.

It was damaged after floods in early 2019.

The project, estimated to be around R2.7 million, was to be concluded by June, however lockdown regulations slowed down the process.

The journey concluded on Monday this week as all stakeholders were present for the re-opening of the road.

RNM Mayor Cynthia Mqwebu praised all parties involved throughout the process.

“I also thank law enforcement and Margate SAPS representatives. Margate is beginning to look beautiful again,” she added.

The appointed contractor for the reconstruction, Margate Construction was awarded the project by RNM project manager Kuhlekani Msomi in April.

Parts of the composite decking were removed and were replaced with clay brick paving, with polycrete railings. The existing 35mm diameter pipe was also replaced with a 900mm diameter pipe.

Panaroma Parade was officially opened on Monday earlier this week, after it was closed for re-construction after the road was heavily damaged from the 2019 rains. Standing from L-R are Max Mbili (RNM Municipal Manager), Leonard Gomo (MBA), Barry Smit (MRARA) RNM Mayor Cynthia Mqwebu, Brigadier William Slabbert, Pieter Bondenstein (Margate Construction), Joanne Wentzell (MBA), Grant Mahr (Wolf Security) and Surina Smuts (MRARA).

“It’s a pleasure and delight to see one of many projects being finished. It brings up the value of Margate and I don’t think anyone truly comprehends the value that this has added. We are extremely grateful and we can see that the partnerships formed throughout the years is bearing fruits,” said Barry Smit, who spoke on behalf of MRRA and MBA.

“What we are doing is not for ourselves but also to compliment RNM on their great work. This is a small stepping stone for bigger things to come, we have many plans in store and we can achieve many great things,” he concluded.
