Speedhumps needed, says Wartski Drive resident

Last year two of Röscher's neighbours were involved in accidents at their gates, due to speeding cars that come around the bend and are not able to stop in time.

In an almost 20 year-old battle, Margate extension three resident MG Röscher, has been trying to get speed humps installed on Wartski Drive.

It is one of the neighbourhood’s busiest roads, in particular the area near Frank Road on the other side of the bridge, leading into Extension Three.

“It’s a high accident zone. Sometimes I have to speed in to my driveway just to avoid someone crashing into me. In September last year there was four accidents in this danger zone,” Röscher said.

MG Röscher is adamant that a few speedbumps placed on Wartski Drive would reduce the risks of repeated accidents on that section of the road.

“Further up the road, there are poles with no warning or danger signs and they have been like that for years,” he added.

According to Röscher, he has sent multiple emails to Ray Nkonyeni Municipality which have gone unanswered.

He has also created a petition, supported by a number of ratepayers, which was sent to the local councillor and RNM, but without success in getting any work done on the road.

“I’ve been trying for the last five years to get something done. Before that my late father also tried, so we are talking about an 18 to 20 year battle. We’ve had two different councillors come and inspect the place over the years,” said Röscher.

Last year two of Röscher’s neighbours were involved in accidents at their gates, due to speeding cars that come around the bend and are not able to stop in time.

What makes it of even more concern for Röscher is that Margate Middle School is situated down the road, thus putting learners walking to school at risk.

“We need these speedhumps to slow down cars so that residents in this area can actually get in and drive out without being worried. We are tired of living in fear of an accident,” he said.
