Help Eddie pay his medical bills

Last year, Eddie was forced to cancel his medical aid as he could not afford the premiums on his pension.

The family of Eddie Cousins (84), who lives in Manaba Beach has set up a Go Fund Me page to help raise money to pay his medical bills which currently stands at R400 000.

The bills piled up after Eddie had to seek medical attention at a private hospital during the recent unrest. As roads to Port Shepstone were closed at the time, he was unable to get help at Port Shepstone Regional Hospital.

So far, £4000 has been raised with a goal of £25 000.

Last year, Eddie was forced to cancel his medical aid as he could not afford the premiums on his pension.

“In July, my dad was admitted to Port Shepstone Regional Hospital with a dead leg. It was diagnosed as acute limb ischaemia as no blood was flowing to his lower leg, and he had to have his left leg amputated above the knee,” said his daughter, Cathy Roberts.

Eddie returned home a few days later, however his health deteriorated rapidly. Due to the looting and road closures he was taken to the local hospital in Margate which is a private hospital, as the roads to Port Shepstone were closed.

“My dad was diagnosed again with no blood flow, this time in his right leg. The prognosis was not looking good. We were told he would most probably lose his right foot,” added Cathy.

The family was given a 50% success rate for a stent bypass operation to Eddie’s right leg. Doctors went ahead with the surgery which appears to be successful. Eddie remained in high care for two weeks and is now in a general ward.

Unfortunately, this stint in hospital has cost in the region of R400 000. Also there is the added cost of medical devices, ongoing physiotherapy and medicines.

The family has set up a Go Fund Me page to help raise funds for these bills. They are appealing to any person or business that can assist, if able to visit: https://gofund.me/ba982342
