Teacher Nkazimulo Nyawose taught foundation phase learners at Hlangani Preparatory School about safety around water.
Learners enjoyed illustrations and demonstrations that Nkazimulo created for them.
Meanwhile, certain staff members were taught basic firefighting skills at school last Friday.
The course was taught by Shaun Hartley, a registered firefighter and was attended by staff members Wonderboy Mbili, Maniraj Ramsaroop and Gerald Conradie.
Training predominantly focused on implementing fire drills and evacuation as well as the correct use of a fire extinguisher.
The course also helped attendees to identify different types of fires, explain and practice fire prevention, operate basic firefighting equipment, perform basic firefighting procedures, identify emergency situations and implement an emergency evacuation plan.
Attendees will also receive fire marshal certificates.
It is useful to have a fire marshal at school as they act as a backup while awaiting firefighters. If there is an incident at school, it is the duty of the fire marshal to take charge and lead learners and staff to safety.
The school thanked Shaun for conducting the short course.
