Alan Fagan, a resident at the Widenham Retirement Village, will be publishing his very first novel, “From Under A Mango Tree”, in just a few weeks.
From Under A Mango Tree, which is filled with adventure, excitement and emotion, is based on a true story which was told to Alan by his grandfather, Cornelius Engelbrecht, almost 55 years ago under their mango tree on a smallholding in Rhodesia (Zimbabwe).
The story lay dormant until 10 years ago when he decided to write it. Even though Alan was only a little lad at the time he was told these stories, he never forgot anything.
The story moves from his grandfather’s travels to his uncle’s Boxer dog, Spike, who carved a special niche in the legends of the Zambezi Valley. His uncle, employed by the Rhodesian Government to cull rogue animals, catch poachers and rescue animals from the rising waters of Kariba, always had Spike by his side.
The book highlights Africa’s good and difficult times, and shows his love for its people and the land. It is described by the author as a family read for people of all ages, especially those with an interest in Africa and animals.
Alan was hesitant with publishing… until now.
“Without my wife Lee encouraging me and convincing me to put this book out there, I don’t think I would have actually done it, so thank you Lee,” he said.
Alan has always been interested in writing and over the years has written short stories and poetry. When he isn’t writing, Alan is managing his insurance broking business.
In the past, the thrill-seeking author has been sky-diving, bungee jumping, and did the Wild Gorge Swing at Oribi Gorge. He also participated in many marathons including the Comrades.
Alan hopes to feel a similar rush of excitement when his book gets published in September.
