Quick-thinking teens help Harding Saps make arrest

The men fled with the money, cellphone and earphones.

Sterling police work resulted in two robbers recently being sentenced in the Izingolweni Magistrate’s Court.

Magistrate Bryan Munilall sentenced Siniko Gwija (29) to 15 years’ imprisonment and Thuthukani Ngesi (27) to 10 years’ imprisonment for robbery with aggravating circumstances.

Both were declared unfit to own a firearm.

On March 19, 2020, two teenagers who were given R20 each by their grandmother to go on a hike were held at gun point (with a toy gun) by two men at the ‘N2 Hiking Spot’.

The men fled with the money, cellphone and earphones.

Soon after the incident, the teens went to Harding police station to report the incident.

But, along the way they met Constable Sabelo Cwele and Sergeant Nozuku Nongoloza from Harding Saps and informed them about the incident.

The quick-thinking teenagers gave the police a very accurate description of the robbers.

It was while patrolling that Cwele and Nongoloza spotted the men, who fitted the description given by the teens. They gave chase and arrested the men.

Detective Sergeant Siyabonga Gasa from Harding said it was due to the teens reporting this incident immediately that police were able to act quickly and make arrests.
