Brian Blumrick leads Rotary

Gavin will be DGE for 2022 – 2023 in District 9370, which encompasses KwaZulu-Natal, the Eastern Cape and the Free State, parts of the Northern Cape and North West and the Mountain Kingdom of Lesotho.

Due to lock-down restrictions, the Rotary Club of Hibiscus Coast was unable to induct new president Brian Blumrick who took office on July 1. However, District Governor, Maddy Webber’s recent visit and the slightly relaxed restrictions was a good opportunity to do so.

Brian is serving as president for the third time since he became a member in 2015, which is proof of his admirable leadership. The appointment is not made lightly as it is the highest honour within the powers of the club to bestow upon a member, but it is made in recognition of their service to Rotary in general and to this club in particular.

In his acceptance speech, President Brian said: “We live in interesting times with the Covid-19 virus and our reaction to it will go down in the history books. Our club will be judged on how it handled the situation. Our compassion and our ability to open our hearts to those in need combined with our commitment to share our time, talent, and treasures with those who are less fortunate is what causes ordinary Rotarians such as ourselves to do the extraordinary things that we do. It’s what makes Rotary so magical.”

He also thanked immediate Past President Gavin Jepson for his leadership during the last Rotary year and wished him success with his position as District Governor Elect (DGE).

Prior to the installation ceremony, DGE Jepson provided an excellent recap of the accomplishments by the club during his tenure as president (2020-2021).

He also acknowledged and presented Rotarian Johnny de Wet with the club’s Presidential Award as the Rotarian who went the extra mile and is an example of Rotary’s motto of “Service Above Self”.

Johnny is a well-known public figure on the South Coast. He previously served as Mayor of Margate and is actively involved with tourism, chamber of commerce, as well as one of the main organisers of the annual Rotary Club of Hibiscus Coast golf days.

The club also showcased its projects to DG Webber during her visit. A DG is the chief administrative officer of a Rotary district, they provide leadership, motivation, and guidance to Rotary clubs under the general supervision of the Rotary International board of directors.

The club’s signature project is the Uvongo Fleamarket. It provides an income to traders, cleaners and car guards. It is a landmark and major tourist attraction on the South Coast for more than 25 years.
