Tree thieves strike in Tweni

All the trees planted were indigenous to the Umtentweni area.

About 50 of the 92 indigenous trees planted in celebration of Arbor Week in Umtentweni last week, were stolen.

Port Shepstone Lions joined the Umtentweni Conservancy and Ratepayers and planted fluted milkwood, giant pock ironwood, forest mahogany, forest fever berry and white stinkwood along Commercial Road.

The bushes along the railway line had been cleared of several invasive species which had provided ample space for planting.

Lion Denis Meyer described it as a sad situation.

“It was a malicious act, the trees were ripped out of the ground.”

All the trees planted were indigenous to the Umtentweni area.

Sheppie Lions had sponsored 20 of the trees and planted several of these on the day.
