Rapist sentenced to life

This case received immediate attention and police arrested the man at his residence in Bokodise location near Shaka Store.

A 48-year-old rapist was recently sentenced to life imprisonment in the Port Shepstone Regional Court.

The rapist misused his position of trust and repeatedly raped the teen (14) known to him during 2015.

He also threatened to assault the young girl.

After she could no longer tolerate the abuse, she bravely spoke out to a neighbor who reported the rape.

Police spokesman Captain Petros Mpinge said the teen’s claims were not initially believed, and she was victimised by some family members for allegedly accusing the respected family man of such a crime.

This case received immediate attention and police arrested the man at his residence in Bokodise location near Shaka Store.

He remained in custody during his trial.

The man made his final appearance in court on July 2, 2021 where he was sentenced to life imprisonment.

He was declared unfit to possess a firearm and his name was entered in the National Register for Sex offenders.

The investigating officer finalising the case was Detective Warrant Officer Rennie Pillay of the Family Violence, Child Protection and Sexual Offences Unit Margate.

Mpinge said cases of rape involving minors are extremely sensitive and always distressing for the child as well as the police members investigating such cases.

* Children will not lie about incidences of abuse or rape and anyone whom they report to must always take immediate action in protecting and assisting them.

* Children are often abused by persons known to them, persons they would trust and who are much older than themselves and therefore reporting such abuses is difficult and traumatising.

* Parents must provide age appropriate education for their children and reassure them of their love and approval, and that it is never their fault if they are victims of such abuses.
