Fallen Friends plot way to raise nearly R130k for hospice

BT King of South Coast Hospice thanked all who had donated as well as those who had made the event possible.

A total of nearly R130 000 was raised for South Coast Hospice‘s patient care, Kingfisher House inpatient unit and Hospice at Home programme during the Fallen Friends annual fundraiser last Friday.

The event was held at Douglas Mitchell Sports Ground where 529 ‘plots’ were ‘sold’ to raise funds.

Fallen Friends also honoured the memory of one of its founders, Neville Tutton.

Winners of the cash prizes of R10 000, R3 000 and R2 000 were Jon Caple, John Brannon and Jacques ? , respectively.

One of the highlights of the day was seeing the Airtrack helicopter fly in to drop the specially prepared parcels of dye powder and flowers onto the field to determine the winning plots.

Hearts sank at first when the red flower ball fell outside the grid, but the well prepared pilot had made contingency plans and had a spare parcel, so circled round again and this time hit the target, three times, to perfection.

Pilot Daniél Ludick, with brother Kaden, who dropped the bags.

It turned out that the pilot was not Hendrik Ludick as expected – he was out on a recovery mission – but instead his daughter Daniél, with her brother Kaden on board to help.

The siblings visited the venue afterwards, where Daniél was introduced as the pilot. She was well received and congratulated on her skills, while Kaden was thanked for accurate marksmanship.

Following all the above excitement, some new friends join the Fallen Friends fundraising event,

Douglas Mitchell club sold hamburgers on the day and donated a portion of the sales to South Coast Hospice.

Margate Darts Association put together a singles and doubles competition in the afternoon, providing hampers to be raffled on the day. The raffle was won by Sue Caple.

All proceeds from the darts competition were donated to hospice.

Fallen Friends next fundraiser for hospice is a Ladies Pool Competition at The Cove on October 9.

The theme is Alice in Wonderland. Contact Theresa Knox on 0723719941 for bookings
