Seven month old baby found abandoned in Mkholombe

Phumza Morai, PRO of Port Shepstone Regional Hospital said that the baby is in stable condition and receiving treatment.

A seven month old baby was found in the Mkholombe area near Marburg last Tuesday.

The baby boy was dumped in a bush along with two nappies and a bottle.

According to police spokesman Captain Petros Mpinge, “Members from Saps Port Shepstone responded to a complaint in Marburg near a hardware store on September 28 around 12:00, where they found an abandoned baby.”

He was found by three men who were returning from a local shop.

Bheki Ntetha and Monde Ntombela who found the boy, they saw a woman carrying a baby while on their way to the shop but took no notice of her.

“When we were coming back from the shop, we noticed a blanket and heard a voice. We went closer to look and discovered that it was a baby. We phoned the police and they also sent an ambulance,” explained Ntetha.

The men said they were shocked to see a baby in the middle of nowhere.

Port Shepstone Saps have appealed to the community to assist them with any information regarding this baby.

Mpinge further confirmed that police are investigating a case of child abandonment.

He added that the baby of about seven months was taken to hospital for an examination.

Anyone with information or anyone who may have seen a person behaving suspiciously at the time, can contact the police.

Phumza Morai, PRO of Port Shepstone Regional Hospital said that the baby is in stable condition and receiving treatment.

“Social workers at the hospital are communicating with Port Shepstone Child Welfare, so that he can be placed in a home once his treatment is complete,” said Morai.

Meanwhile, mothers who find themselves unwilling or unable to care for their newborns have a safe alternative.

Port Shepstone Baptist Church have an initiative called the ‘baby saver box’.

It is situated on the church’s carpark fence, just across the road from the Port Shepstone Regional Hospital.

The baby saver box is open 24 hours a day and individuals can leave a baby there anonymously as a last resort.

An alarm will sound and the baby will be taken to the hospital for medical care, and from there placed in foster care or adopted.
