Margate artist finds inspiration in nature

Richard plans to focus on his art as he feels that this is what he is meant to do.

Artist Richard Bothma (22), who grew up in Margate, is a talented impressionistic landscape oil painter.

Richard now lives in Cape Town and finds nature his inspiration, and in the country’s terrain.

From a young age, Richard was taught to appreciate all that nature had to offer.

He grew up surrounded by people who love plants, and at the age of nine, joined the South African Orchid Society and that is where his passion for plants grew stronger.

Richard Bothma’s incredible display of art work.

“I love gardening and was brought up outside, surrounded by plants and animals. Nature is a part of me and thus, I feel that painting landscapes, flowers, the sky and more comes naturally to me,” he explained.

Calven le Roux, the curator of Cornerstone Creek Art Gallery in Hoekwil said that as a landscaper in his local garden centre, to Richard’s walks in the nearby mountains, he was fascinated by the smallest of flowers to the largest expanse of mountains. The world’s beauty inspires him and continues to inspire him and his works.

Richard Bothma is known for his paintings of vibrant flower fields.

At the age of 10, he started pencil sketches, drawing flowers, wildlife and still life.

“Richard started painting and quickly developed a strong passion for oil painting in 2015. South African landscapes and nature are his inspiration for his paintings and he has become best known for his sky techniques, vibrant flower fields and water lily scenes,” said Calven.

“South Africa, my homeland, is just so exquisite. There is inspiration and beauty all around us. My dream is to travel the country and paint the beauty of South Africa,” he said.

Richard plans to focus on his art as he feels that this is what he is meant to do.

“I take each day as it comes and am exactly where I want to be in life. My dream for the future is that my art career will continue to grow.”
