Water ambassadors to monitor leaks
The water ambassador programme started in September and will continue for 10 months.
Ugu District Municipality has established an Expanded Public Works Programme (EPWP) Ugu District Youth Water Ambassador Programme.
This programme has 43 young people including five supervisors employed to report on water leaks, burst pipes, water shortages, illegal water connections and any water related issues in communities or wards.
The mayor of Ugu Municipality councillor Sizwe Ngcobo said that it is a 10 month contract and that the water ambassadors will receive a stipend of R1500, and the supervisors will get R2000.
The water ambassador programme started in September and will continue for 10 months.
“They will meet weekly with Ugu officials to report on the issues in wards.”
The mayor said that these ambassadors will be working hand-in-hand with the control centre.
He emphasised that the control centre will still be operating and that this programme will help the municipality and communities to respond quicker to water issues.
These ambassadors were recruited through local municipalities.
Umdoni has nine ambassadors, Umzumbe also has nine, Umuziwabantu has seven and Ray Nkonyeni has 18.
Cllr Ngcobo explained that they will be in communities looking for these water issues and then reporting back to Ugu officials.
