Policeman shot in arm as Mistake Farm residents in Umzinto protest against voting
There is still a heavy police presence in the area and the situation remains tense.
Community members from Mistake Farm in Umzinto have taken a stand against voting since Saturday (October 30).
During the special votes this weekend, there was an altercation between residents and their local councillor and his armed bodyguards.
Reports indicate that it is because the residents were unhappy and felt that he was not a deserving candidate to be on the ballot.
Police then responded to the attack on the councillor, and when they arrived they were attacked with stones and firearms.
One policeman was shot in the arm and Saps vehicles were stoned and damaged with bullet holes.
Once more policemen arrived at the scene, the situation was taken under control, but the community continued to protest against voting throughout the weekend.
Since the early hours of the morning today (November 1), the residents have kept the roads and entrances to Mistake Farm blocked with debris and blocks to prevent anyone from going to voting stations.
There is still a heavy police presence in the area and the situation remains tense.
An official police report and update is awaited.
