This morning Port Shepstone Civic Centre voting station was ready for residents to make their mark as early as 6am.
The Herald visited the voting station and spoke to a few people who had already voted, to find out what their hopes and expectations are after these elections and this is what they had to say.
Snegugu Machi: I voted because I want to change the way we live, we need change in ward 18 and we need good change.

Rory Elam: I am hoping that someone exits, that’s all!

Dr Moosa Desai and his wife Tasmia: We are hoping that the local government prioritises water because this is the main issue we have in our town. We are also hoping for good governance, better roads and hoping the municipality will take initiative.
