Mobile library empowers learners improve English in rural schools

Spokesperson for Siyathanda Ukufunda, Jenny Baker said they are a mobile library to schools, and that they take books to schools for learners to read with understanding.

English is an international and a business language mostly spoken or used for examinations in all schools.

As a means to create English understanding, teams of learners from rural Ugu primary schools participated in Siyathanda Ukufunda Mobile Library to Schools, a local non-governmental organisation based at CFC in Southbroom outside Margate, English Quiz Schools 2021 contest recently.

Six rural schools participated in Quiz Schools 2021 held at CFC in Southbroom outside Margate to promote their English reading and understanding.

This was their charitable way of empowering learners from six local or rural schools. The beneficiary schools were initially meant to be nine in total but three withdrew their participation in this book reading and question competition.

Spokesperson for Siyathanda Ukufunda, Jenny Baker said they are a mobile library to schools and that they have books in their library. “We take books to schools and give them to learners to read with understanding. It’s like a book review and we bring learners together to answer questions from the books that they read,” said Baker.

Tongasi Primary is the overall winner of Quiz Schools 2021 held at CFC in Southbroom outside Margate. They won books, certificates and other prizes.

“These are English books because we want learners from rural schools to read and understand English in order for them to pass their grades. Remember that they write their examinations in English and for them to answer questions correctly, they need to understand English,” said Baker.

Ms Baker said six schools participated this year. These are Sikhuthali, Thongazi, Dlukulwane, Insingisi and Turtle Creek Primary Schools, and Thuba Wild Coast Community College.

Thuba Wild Coast Community College won books, goodies and received participation certificates as they won second place in Quiz Schools 2021.

“The winners of the competition won English books, other goodies or prizes to motivate them to continue doing well in reading and understanding English. The learners were further motivated by a seasoned local book author Pieter de Bruin encouraging them to write their own stories,” said Baker.
